Composer. He is most famous for his light operas in collaboration with Sir William Schwenck Gilbert. Their works include "Trial By Jury", "The Sorcerer", "H.M.S. Pinafore", "Pirates of Penzance", "The Mikado", "The Gondoliers" and "The Yeomen Of The Guard". He also penned many hymns, (including "Onward, Christian Soldiers" - his most famous), a symphony, oratorios, and one grand opera, "Ivanhoe", which opened the current Palace Theatre in London as the Royal English Opera House.
